What If We Built a Canal Between U.S. and Mexico?

What If We Built a Canal Between U.S. and Mexico?

How about we rip the United States and Mexico apart from each other, geographically speaking? It would open up new trade routes that would make a ton of money for both countries, and it could create a whole new tourism industry for cities along the canal. But would it be worth its giant price tag? And could it create political instability?

What If is a mini-documentary web series that takes you on an epic journey through hypothetical worlds and possibilities. Join us on an imaginary adventure — grounded in scientific theory — through time, space and chance, as we ask what if some of the most fundamental aspects of our existence were different.

  4. Coming Foryou on September 2, 2023 at 6:56 pm

Instead of a wall , this is what we should be doing. To increase revenue, better life, jobs, tourism. And that is something both countries will be benefiting from. It’s also a major world project which could employ all cultures , races, societies … And the canals also have bridges for wildlife to get across from back and forth… Could use marijuana taxes to build it too. Money that wasn’t there to begin with. But now is.

  21. SoundRogue on September 2, 2023 at 7:17 pm

I will edit this comment as I watch because people complain I write multiple comments even though it’s honestly a minor inconvenience.

    Part 1
    1. "would it cause political instability?" Uh… guys, we could build a bridge; it’s honestly not that hard.
    2. "Would the price tag be worth it?" Uh, guys… it would create jobs! It would economically benefit both parties! Even so, it cost MONEY to maintain a wall!
    3. 0:44 I just thought I’d remind people the entire thing isn’t walled; there are gaps.

    4. 1:14 were already affecting the environment as it is according to the leftist; even so, assuming we’re still going to use gas and oil; wouldn’t it make sense in the long run to have a faster trade route and as thus decrease the time boats spend in the water? "What about the environment" okay, then what about it? If climate change is such an issue, why aren’t we building a trade route that would speed up shipping resources? Wouldn’t that increase the speed of production of bringing resources from one place to another, such as resources needed for the following;
power plants, solar panels, and or wind farms? Wouldn’t that as well decrease the time ships carrying oil would spend in the water? Wouldn’t that decrease the odds of an oil spill from happening?

    5. 1:26 you do realize how pollution works, right? It would affect the ENTIRE world, not just this area, again; my argument above talking about moving resources from point A to point B; if you care about the environment, then let’s decrease the amount of time those said resources are being wasted and going up into the atmosphere.
    6. 1:41 how would a canal make them even more endangered? Wouldn’t the canal just split the two sections then? That wouldn’t make them more or less endangered; whatever problem they’re facing is what making them endangered! If we really cared about them being endangered, then why haven’t we solved the issue about this yet? Better yet, we have the ability to preserve these creatures and try to save them by creating a better environment. Again if we really cared we would’ve tried to solve the issue already.
    7. 1:47 HOW? You never said HOW! 1:58 "could" HOW! Say it! Come on! 1:59 no. Okay, then why don’t we just PLANT food sources then? That way, the animals could benefit from the food planted in the area?

    8. 2:43 okay 1. government incompetence, 2. a wall as it will cost more in the long run + maintenance cost! Oh, and the whole "but we can’t afford it!" I’m sorry, but didn’t we pointlessly spend a trillion dollars on a useless drone that didn’t even get off the ground? We could, oh I don’t know, SAVE MONEY! We could put tax dollars instead of endless wars; how about we USE that money to build the canal then! This honestly wouldn’t be a problem if the federal government just didn’t spend, spend, spend!

If I do recall, the pentagon MISPLACED 2.7 TRILLION DOLLARS! How about instead of being a bunch of morons and misplacing this money and USING THAT FOR THE PENTAGON? HOW ABOUT WE USE IT TO BUILD A CANAL!!!! So the left and the right; both of you shut up about "cost" alright!

    9. 3:43 back to point 8. Do I need to bring up point 8 again? Stop complaining about the cost, the left wants healthcare, and the right wants military bases; you two BOTH SHUT UP about cost.
    10. 3:53 EASY! Whoever puts the most money into THIS project gets the bigger cut of the pie! If America puts more money on this project, then WE should economically benefit more! It’s that simple!
    11. 4:06 "it would cost a couple trillion dollars across a couple of states" HHHHHHMMMMM!!!!! Point 8 again! Oh, and don’t even MAKE ME bring up the failed experimental military weapons that were a waste of money but don’t worry, we don’t care about that because we only care about the cost sometimes!
    12. 4:13 HAHAHA! Oh, you really don’t know how dumb the government is when it comes to spending, do you? The problem is the government fumbles and screws up on how they use that money; CONSTANTLY, it would be cheaper if a charity did this instead of the government.
    13. 4:18 full stop; they already want to cut the budget of those things! They’re already planning on it, and they’ve BEEN SLOWLY CUTTING IT! Again you only, "care" because you don’t want people to realize this!

    14. 4:20 HOW? This will economically BENEFIT Mexico as well increasing their GDP! "Oh no! The US is increasing the GDP of MEXICO! They’re RAAAAAACCCCIIIISSSSTTTTT!!!!!!"
    15. 4:31 "could" yeah it "could" yeah no it doesn’t matter, why? Have you seen the US and its military? The places we occupy and place our boots in! The war crimes we commit? Do you want to know how you frame this to the people, "hey, this will improve the economic stability of people in Mexico and America" BOOM! If they don’t like it, they can complain all they want, but no one will care at the end of the day, and it won’t matter!

Conclusion; Wow, your argument boils down to things that can be easily refuted. You LITERALLY repeated many of your arguments throughout this video.

  29. Carl Kevin Young Jung on September 2, 2023 at 7:21 pm

It’s 2021, we don’t need to dig all that dirt and in reality could probably accomplish this at a fraction of the cost. Multiple engineering advances in the last 100 years make this a pretty simple and inexpensive proposition, but then the US would have difficulty with its slave labor program, the UN won’t make an exception for the US, they simply look the other way since its incevizened and not explicit now.

  30. Ceferino Garza on September 2, 2023 at 7:24 pm

Mexico is already building their own canal

  31. Jeff Russell on September 2, 2023 at 7:24 pm

  32. purcedure on September 2, 2023 at 7:24 pm

@All – Sixth Extinction means those animals were already doomed. Pollution can be filtered. Bigger projects would create more sustainability for asteroid mining projects to exist, specially when the project would pay for itself in time and would bring Hydro power to millions and could handle billions of families.

( I am possibly being way too generous, and underestimating not only the cost, but the number of years needed to recoup the losses! )

  40. PJ Campbell on September 2, 2023 at 7:33 pm

I absolutely do not care at all about having ang bridge to Mexico.

    1. everything removed during digging. you use that to build up coastal areas that need it.

    2. use the soil removed to build islands off our coast like Dubai built. pre sell that property. that’s billions in real-estate right there.

    3. the canal would pay for itself in the first couple of years.

the only two downfall I see
    1. the embezzling crooks we elect

2 the disruption to the wildlife

  41. Miguel Avila on September 2, 2023 at 7:35 pm

Texas alone would stop the making of this 😂 the national forest that would get fucked over by that ? The towns and country on the Texas line are quite relaxed people. You think they’ll want this
