What If We Nuked an Asteroid?

What If We Nuked an Asteroid?

Watch our Discussed episode where we dive deeper into the topic with Bill Nye: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nh0plHHtZ28

An asteroid races toward Earth. It’s big, it’s fast, and it’s about to do a lot of damage. But we’re not just going to sit around and wait for the end of days. We’re going to fight back. What would happen if we nuked an asteroid? Would it save humanity? Or make things worse? How does a nuclear blast in space compare to a blast on Earth? And would our nukes even be strong enough to destroy it?

In case of nuking an asteroid you have to hit a target, which moves with high velociy and according to a german documentary a nuke would have almost done nothing to the asteroid. There is also the risk that the asteroid breaks into smaller pieces after getting nuked. These pieces are smaller but still large enough to cause catasrophic impacts. On earth it might happen, when these pieces are scattered across the globe. So the earth comes face to face not with an asteroid but instead with an approaching cloud of large pieces of rock still large enough to result in incredible devastation.

Nukes can’t destroy asteroid couple miles wide. Biggest nuke crater on Earth is less than half mile wide, and only 100 meters deep…the deepest.

If we dig the bomb into the astroid and detonate it the debris from it would go everywhere and could hit the earth

  39. Sage Animations on August 24, 2023 at 7:09 pm

I wonder if it could be possible that eventually through dart. Asteroids would end up orbiting the earth and create rings? Just food for thought

  40. Typhoon on August 24, 2023 at 7:09 pm

The nuke that is probably capable for this mission is Russia’s "Sarmat ICBM" since it has unlimited range.
