What If We Set Aside Half the Planet for Wildlife?

What If We Set Aside Half the Planet for Wildlife?

About 65 million years ago, a mass extinction event occurred, wiping out more than 75% of all species on Earth. There have only been 5 mass extinctions in our planet’s 4.5 billion year history. But the next one has already started. By the end of this century, one in six species on Earth could be gone. Will humans go with them?

We need to set aside 90% of the planet for nature. Considering that humans only occupy only 10% of the planets still habitable surface i think that nature should be given near total supremacy again.

  3. LillyDaSilva on August 22, 2023 at 6:24 pm

Unfortunately, we humans always seem to need to loose it all first, before we learn to appreciate what we had… maybe we need a new mass extinction ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€

The no human side would eventually have humans due to the low cost of living from camping full time and the amount of natural resources that would be available to survive.

How about we set aside the eastern hemisphere? The western hemisphere has all those rich countries, so we could help the people that live in developing countries. Although than again, if we set aside the western hemisphere, we could save the amazon rainforest…

The question is which half and for how long will we allow them this peace. Another question is are we prepared to deal with evolved animals.

    25 Percent for Wildlife
    50 Percent for Human Population
10 Percent for Companys and Factorys
10 Percent on Plant Crop growth
    5 percent on Cattle

Let’s not bother, as 65 million years ago, planet was doomed, it wasn’t over population or any environmental problem. Fear Allah that’s it

We do One things So Every Country make their forest area in their center of the country it’s possible I think

  26. Kyle Gamble on August 22, 2023 at 6:50 pm

I’m sorry but this is just fear mongering, misinformation and bad faith.
Half-Earth is an idea from Edward O Wilson who, while mentioned in this video, isn’t credited as it’s creator. I strongly recommend everybody to read his book if you do care for the environment and want the actual information on Half-Earth.

First of all, it wouldn’t involve displacing people or rampant famines and no farming due to water and land loss, where the hell did that come from? Again, this video fails to cite that. There’s no reason it should be the care – I’m assuming the video-makers think it’s about slicing the world in half and dedication that one half to the biosphere, and the other to human populations. However, it’s not that at all. It’s literally about protecting the bits of nature which we do have and restoring that which we’ve lost. Each country could do their part by dedicating half of their land to nature. This would mean, for example in the USA, each state could mark areas with no towns or cities as conservation zones. At WORST this would mean reclaiming land owned by some small handful of rich people who use it for no reason at all and dedicating it to conservationism. At WORSE it would mean that people cannot just so easily ‘buy’ land for factories.

It’s not as drastic as this video really makes it out to be, and it is achievable and logical. Edward O Wilson spent his entire life study Biology and wrote books from the 70s up to his dead in Late 2021/2022.. This does a disservice to Edward O Wilson and his entire lifetime of study and writing, and doesn’t even cite its arguments. To sensationalise it as some distant fantasy, is bad faith and doesn’t even consider the possibility of this, which we NEED as a means to save the planet.

PLEASE read Half-Earth by Edward O Wilson. It’s a relatively short book (260-300 pages or so) and his writing is captivating and written so that people who have never once studied Biology or Ecology could understand and learn a lot from it.

Population matters. I’m not having kids because the environment needs to thrive. Stop killing animals!!!! Stop hunting.

I donโ€™t mean any offense but we take up 50-70 percent of the earth as it is. So really if we sanctioned off half the earth weโ€™d most likely be okay

More than 70% of land is unused by humans. So technically this would be a downgrade.

Everybody who has 3+ kids is contributing to the slow death of this world. The best thing that can happen to this planet is the human population quits expanding
