He would be a nobody if it weren’t for his dad…. NOBODY
Van Hawkin!
Great video… your feelings on these guys is right on..
Eddie won piano championships right? And couldn’t read music at the time?
He killed it and made it look fun and effortless the whole time.
What did it for me was seeing Dirk and Lerxst up on stage again was just emotional for me. I had a tear in the eye and a smile on my face. Seeing Dave with those guys was amusing. Not sure if it was picked up by those who watched that segment but, it would appear that Ged and Alex were partially amused by the time keeping of both drummers. Taylor’s Son just absolutely destroyed…kid was freakin great. Couldn’t help but think with all the percussionist that played that this was (on top of the benefit) a audition
I tip my hat to you sir, well done. The only thing I keep saying to myself is that I wish it didn’t take the passing of one of the greats to bring together so many amazing musicians. This needs to happen on the regular. All day concerts celebrating great musicians, great songs, and great bands.
I saw Wolfgang live. He’s the real deal.
Ya great talent, however wasted on yet another crappy teenie bopper van halen song!!! Their music esp. With Roth never evolved in the least, for that matter neither did Eddie’s solo’s. He made a career out of fret tapping, something other great guitarist’s did once or twice then moved on. See DLR’s comment about Eddie’s solo for Michael Jackson
Wolfie KILLED his performance. Really looking forward to seeing what he does in the future.
Yeah but he needs to lay off the cheeseburgers. Be a musician, not an offensive lineman my guy.
Was WG playing on of Eddie’s guitars?
Wolfgang is the real deal!!! I’m sure Ed was smiling from ear to ear watching his boy!!
Wolf is a beast, I love the mammoth wvh album
Also mentioning time and feel, Shane Hawkins had time an emotionally stunted guy in tears
Everything he did you could tell he got from his father
For him to play in front of that many people in the stadium and over the internet was nuts. He kept it composed and he played in time
I watched the start of the show while it was live(started at 1.30am for me) I did skip some things to begin with, but by the time they played my hero I was spent
Couldn’t talk to anyone for a couple hours after it
And the fact that both Wolf and Shane lost their dads and it was Father’s Day in Australia, yeah I was a mess
It was an awesome show to pay tribute to an awesome musician/father/person
Anyone who hasn’t checked out Taylor’s solo stuff and NHC needs to do it
I really don’t think it was..but all I can say is if it was a backing track, it was definitely not from the studio version of HFT
The Van Halens all have sickening time.
Rick could you please do a show just on Lyle Mays? Perhaps interview Steve Rodby, the bassist for the Pat Metheny group? He was his closest friend
Or mebbe that dork’s PC has Wal- Mart caliber lag.
Wolfgang is crazy talented, his new record is an incredible hard rock album. So many great tunes, strong melody and the guy can sing!
That brief moment, where Dave’s visibly smiling and taking it all in … that’s it.
Wolfgang Van Halen is killer. Love the MammothWVH album. It is not Van Halen, but there is only 2 songs I disliked on it. One was the first single, which won a Grammy!
Wolfie is awesome🤘❤️
Dead on man , you got it right.
The spirit of Eddie lives in him.
I got his album when it came out and really dug it. He did everything on it… I really liked his drumming and bass playing, and his guitar playing was really good… but this performance was great. I love On Fire, and love the frenetic guitar playing… and WVH ripped it up. Hot for teacher isn’t my fav VH song, but he killed that too.
I knew Wolfgang was super talented, but still…blew me away last weekend. Outstanding performance!
Backing track? People never cease to amaze me. Just watch the video.
As much as anything, this reminds me that we haven’t yet got a tribute concert for Eddie Van Halen.
What’s up with that?
Lmao dat singer holding the mic up to an electric guitar
1st. Wolfgang wouldn’t fake it. He would probably have stayed on the bass if he couldn’t play it. He just seems too honest. 2nd. He has a musical lineage. His Grandfather was no slouch, and of course, his father and uncle were obviously gifted. It’s in his genes.
It’s like Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli, it’s hard to have famous parents
It honestly sounded so close to the album(s)…amazing! He’s definitely a Van Halen.
Somebody thought that was actually a backing track????? wow.
Talk about leaving a legacy
He did more than just mimic the playing, he did it with little effort, and he had the same spark in his eyes that dad used to have, a long time ago. It was a great moment, and I hope he plans to bring it more often, it was a pleasure to see..!!
Rick, you should interview Wolf, that would be a pretty interesting thing to watch.
I want to talk to some of this, because what Rick is talking about – is commonly used in baseball to refer to the intangibles.
And the kid has em. He just has em. It could be genetics – it could be upbringing, it could be a LOT of things. But whatever he has, it’s good, and he sounds *just* like his dad, who – by the by, might have been possibly the greatest guitar player to ever live.
As a fellow (bad) guitar player, I could immediately tell that it wasn’t tracked. It has a whole different "swing" from the album that’s entirely on par with Van Halen from the early 80’s days. The kid is just that good.
❤️🖤❤️👊👊👊
Good to see Wolfgang has joined the Jason Bonham "I am the best in the style of my dad" club!
"Justin Hawkins Rides Again" is a fantastic YouTube channel. He’s smart, funny, and an excellent musician.
My respect for Wolfgang over the last three years has really grown, he could have easily just put out Van Halen 2.0, but he willfully developed his own original sound and songwriting style with Mammoth WVH, it’s no wonder his dad was so proud of him. Edward’s message was find your own original voice and song writing style. Don’t just mimic others.
I love YOU rick. even tho you did that one thing.
From my point of view, the most impressive part of the solo timing-wise is at 7:17 – it’s SPOT ON. Rick’s face seems to concur 🙂 . You can know the notes, you can come close to the tone, but getting that feel just right, is INCREDIBLE. Wolfie, your Dad is smiling with that huge smile from the great beyond and has never been so proud. Bravo !
I played blues/rock piano, drums, and saxophone semi-professionally for many years. I started on piano at 6, saxophone at 9, and drums at 11. My grandfather who got me started in music and all of my band teachers in school throughout used to say that I had perfect rhythm, which apparently is something that can’t be taught. Keeping Tempo with the music was something that apparently just came naturally to me. I didn’t realize what a blessing that was until I got into my high school bands where the music got much more challenging and complicated.
Just Awesome Stuff!
I was really impressed with him on that performance. He has his dad’s touch. Hot For Teacher sounded like Eddie himself played it.
Well, for one thing, other guitar players didn’t grow up with Eddie Van Halen in the house.
How can people doubt the SON OF THE MASTER
Wolf has that swing like his Pops. Remember: lots of people can play Eddie’s stuff but rarley can someone play with that swing. I dare say A swing that is its own pocket.
My Dad knows a friend of a friend of someone in wolfies band. Had the pleasure of seeing them live at the HoB last year in the upper vip area looking down on the stage. They are a phenomenal live band and was impressed with their songs live compared to the album they released. Wolf is a great musician and hes just starting his own thing. Props to wolf.
