Thanks so much. Best regards from Sweden 🇸🇪

I think before all this calibration should be reviewed. It’s a crucial step in woodworking that most people have difficulty dealing with. I say this because I have trouble with it as well. You could use all the machines that this gentleman showed us but if your table saw and your mitersaw are out of whack then it will all be for nothing

  3. asbrand on February 16, 2023 at 5:19 am

He should rename it to the 4-Step Process. 1 – Jointer, 2 – Planer, 3 – Rip on Tablesaw, and 4 – Crosscut on Miter Saw. Other than that…excellent tips.

  4. Maria Rico on February 16, 2023 at 5:20 am

I got to use these [different planer] in my Intro To Woodworking class at the Indianapolis, IN Woodcraft store. Left the class with my first cutting board.

  5. JEFF ALLRED on February 16, 2023 at 5:20 am

When you ever gonna do a build video like say a strong drawer?? Oh never mind..you did!😂

  6. GMW on February 16, 2023 at 5:21 am

By “woodworking expert,” you must mean “woodworker.”

  7. Jiwan Mukta Singh on February 16, 2023 at 5:21 am

Great video! Amazing class! Greetings from México.

  8. John Hogerhuis on February 16, 2023 at 5:23 am

Is this not about rough lumber? With rough lumber I do a rough cut, joint a face (not an edge), plane to get parallel faces, back to the jointer to joint an edge to use against the table saw fence, then to the table saw to rip to final width.

If you are on the table saw with only one edge surfaced I think it’s not safe.

  9. Fix It French on February 16, 2023 at 5:27 am

For someone who hasn’t bought a planer or a jointer yet, this was actually pretty informative

  10. Marion Dorsett on February 16, 2023 at 5:27 am

Reference edges! Something so simple wow! My projects just got way better with understanding this one thing.

  11. Ronswoodshack on February 16, 2023 at 5:27 am

Absolutely awesome and easy to understand instructions! Thanks guys!

  12. Pieter Boshoff on February 16, 2023 at 5:28 am

Very well explained. Looking forward to part 2. Thanks guys.

  13. CostlierZero1 on February 16, 2023 at 5:29 am

Isn’t using a jointer and planer past the point of most beginners? I feel like someone who wanted to learn beginner woodworking would see this video and be discouraged at the thousands of dollars of equipment being used. There’s so much you can do with just a table saw I disagree with the planer and jointer being advertised as a woodworking 101 necessity.

  14. David Smalley on February 16, 2023 at 5:30 am

Can’t wait till the Woodcraft in my area has its class on wood turning 😊.

  15. Aquatic Adventures on February 16, 2023 at 5:30 am

Why is he not face jointing before edge jointing? If you edge joint, then rip then face joint nothing is going to be square…

  16. Dian on February 16, 2023 at 5:32 am

Hi Matt, thanks for the video, been doing a bit of binging of your channel.

I had a question for you. I just purchased a 6 in benchtop jointer. Still in the box, as I am concerned about the optimal safe height (just watched your safety one 🙂 ) Most of my tools are on counter height rolling carts, but watching this video it is much lower in relation to Steves body. Any good recommendations for positioning safely?

Your small tool rec’s have really helped define my Christmas wish list and things I will be getting my daughter and husband!

  17. Eric Felix on February 16, 2023 at 5:33 am

Great video. Some really good tips. Thanks.

  18. Carlos U on February 16, 2023 at 5:33 am

Thank you! This was an excellent video. I learned alot of safe techniques. Woodworking isn’t as much fun when fingers and blood are everywhere but on your hand! Please keep up the great work and great guests.

Awesome video. It would be super interesting to sit a pick his brain.

  20. Michael Kloepfer on February 16, 2023 at 5:34 am

This is kinda like what do you mean no one wakes you and dresses you.plz thia isn’t reality

  21. Tom Bell on February 16, 2023 at 5:36 am

Like a few others in the comments his order of doing things are just not right, and like someone else said the 0 clearance is to prevent splitting on the backside. I’m just glad he’s not my "professional" teacher.

  22. DENNIS LIRA on February 16, 2023 at 5:36 am

Wow this video is so cool and very very informative. thank you for this information it is going to be very very helpful especially since I am a beginner woodworker and still learning. Keep up the great work and information that you provide to us.

  23. R8ginbull on February 16, 2023 at 5:36 am

Matt, he may have just explained it wrong, but should be joint one face first. Then joint one edge. That gives you one flat face, one straight edge and a 90 deg corner. Then you can go to the table saw and planer. Will save you a lot of headaches later on. Sorry to be against his method but it’s not right

  24. Habibulla M on February 16, 2023 at 5:39 am

Very well explained. Waiting for upcoming sessions….

  30. Michael Grabstein on February 16, 2023 at 5:47 am

Disagree and disappointed that you did not question this poor procedure.
    1. Miter saw first, cutting to rough length will make milling more efficient and safer. Milling 8′ boards is wasteful and cumbersome if you only need 2′ pieces.
    2. Table saw after planer, or at a minimum after face jointing. Should not run on table saw without face jointing or you can get more binding and poor cuts.

  31. Tommyknocker46 on February 16, 2023 at 5:49 am

Nice video as usual. You gotta love that power tip. I tried it and it works great!

  32. David Corliss on February 16, 2023 at 5:50 am

Great tip on the push block thanks for the video Matt

  33. Michael Kloepfer on February 16, 2023 at 5:51 am

Planer and jointer are not beginners tools

  34. Carl McLelland on February 16, 2023 at 5:53 am

EXCELLENT Video, Matt, thanks. What he went over wasn’t anything new, but it was an outstanding reminder of things I/we always need to do…, if we’re going to do it right – the First Time. Looking forward to the next installment……….

  35. Ed Daeges on February 16, 2023 at 5:54 am

I want to STOP . He mentioned not to use your hands for pushers on the jointer. I won’t mention who, there was a professional home builder website and something horribly wrong happened and took off several of the man’s fingers. Please , Please , Please use these tools the right way.
    Bless you all.

10:13 the purpose of the 0 clearance tape is to prevent tear out on the back of the wood

  39. Doresoom Tool Reviews on February 16, 2023 at 6:01 am

Great overview of necessary steps! I do them in a different order to get the most out of my rough cut boards though:
    1) Cut to rough length (usually 1-2" extra for me) on miter saw. This will allow you to get much wider/thicker boards out of crooked stock.
    2) Face joint one side, then edge joint one side. Once again this gets the most usable wood. If your rough cut board has an acute/oblique angle instead of a 90° edge, you’ll lose more material doing it in the opposite order.
    3) Plane opposite side smooth.
    4) Cut to width on table saw.
    5) Cut to final length on miter saw.

Wow, what beginner has industrial tools. He said space and budget is the problem with beginners. This video was a waste of time for me. Should have named this video the master class beginner class.😢

  43. Edi Sh on February 16, 2023 at 6:03 am

    Thanks
Something in the proses is not clear to me, why to go to the tablesaw without any good face, the edge that you cut will be not 90 degree to anything

  44. Jon Sagara on February 16, 2023 at 6:08 am

    Awesome. Thanks, Matt and Steve!
