Woodworking Projects That Sell – Low Cost High Profit – Make Money Woodworking (Episode 11)

Grow your woodworking business with “smalls”! Ready for the latest trends???
Often, smaller items are looked over by new builders looking to make a name for themselves because they are looking for “that one build” that they can sell for a ton of money. They aren’t considering the cost of the build and the time spent making it. Ultimately any business comes down to profit margins. I’ll give you a few examples of how selling items that anyone can afford can generate crazy sales with minimal cost of goods sold!
Sometimes we overthink things when the most profitable items we are looking past. Let’s change that.

I’m new to your channel and was wondering if you’ve made anything with old wood flooring. Just saw some for free and was wondering what they could be used for.

When I was in school, I made a grave mistake during the last step of my final shop project. It was a tool chest that was supposed to have a 1/4 inch round over finish along the edge of the lid. I forgot to set the router depth. As I was cutting I realized I cut too deep but it was too late to fix it. I felt so bad. I called my instructor Mike over and told him what I did. He lowered his glasses and went tsk, tsk, tsk. Lol. He then told me something I will never forget. He said, "emphasize your mistake" then walked away. So I lowered my depth even further to give it a 1/8 edge then the round over finish. I handed it in for a final grading. Mike told me it was his favorite tool chest in the whole class. But i got the lowest mark for not following directions 😂. All in all, it was a fun learning experience.

I’d like to know about that really cut funky chest over your left shoulder? How did you do that? It’s amazing! Love your videos, very inspiring.

  4. ValhallaHawkx on July 6, 2023 at 2:01 pm

How do you find those fence pickets? I can only find pressure treated pine ones in my area. The cedar isn’t treated but they do cost a little bit more.

I’m an electrician and I get wooden wire spools and make all kinds of furniture and what not. But lately I’ve been using the inner wood pieces for an idea I got from you. I burn them and brush it off and stain it and then attach a wine bottle holder and they came out gorgeous

  6. Corvus Knives on July 6, 2023 at 2:02 pm

The quote at the end got you a new sub. Ok, it was the whole vid itself to be fair. Cheers from Brazil, dude. Gonna apply to some of the ideas here for sure.

I love your videos. I can do this stuff. So I’m putting together a woodshop in my garage. Everyone around me must think it’s a good idea also because they have all donated: skillsaw, band saw, reciprocating saw, planer, belt sander, router, and alot more. My shop is almost ready and I’ll be starting with your smalls as learn the ropes. I did take woodshop in high school but that was almost 40 years ago. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Loving your videos! So many great ideas! As a self-taught woodworker trying to lift my business off the ground, these ideas could really help. So thank you soo much! I will aim to head over to your store and see if I can give back a little at some point

For the ladder maybe collect old Christmas trees and use them.

  21. Objectively Real Reality Objectively on July 6, 2023 at 2:15 pm

I actually have a lot of sticks I’m processing, from small trees in my yard. I let the trees get out of control over the years. First ones I’m cutting down have grown up against my house. Planning on furniture and maybe a fence. Some of the trunks could make good fence posts. I ran across your channel earlier today, looking for ideas. I literally have enough debarked branches to make several, maybe five of that bundle of switches wall art. I’m going to build a small milling setup to get slabs from the bigger ones. I’m completely new to woodworking and I have and will have a lot more free material to work from. So much so, I should be able to manage the trees I have, by letting some grow.

My Father once told me, "Son, women are like carburated engines, once they get warm, they can run forever."

  23. Tracy Stewart on July 6, 2023 at 2:15 pm

Lol, the pile of sticks on the wall though! Great ideas and I appreciate that you give how you would do the designs and how much to sell them for. Great content.

  24. rebecca glasgow on July 6, 2023 at 2:22 pm

Love your channel I want to make most of this stuff for my home

  25. Sebastian on July 6, 2023 at 2:22 pm

My first reaction was "How can people pay so much money for this stuff?" Then after 10 minutes I was like "I can make so much more money if I create these things!"

  26. James Robertson on July 6, 2023 at 2:24 pm

How to make a small fortune in woodworking? Start out with a large one.

  27. Kaiper303 on July 6, 2023 at 2:24 pm

Like Thomas Edison when they asked him how he felt about failing over 10,000 times when inventing the lightbulb. He said “I didn’t fail, I learned 10,000 ways how NOT make a lightbulb”. I tell my kids (or anyone, really) we NEVER fail at anything, we either LEARN or we SUCCEED. Appreciate you doing these videos, it’s givin me the desire, drive, and determination to do what I should have been doing YEARS AGO! I owe you one, buddy. 🤙🏻

  28. Charlotte Hewson on July 6, 2023 at 2:25 pm

Since you like quotes, here’s one of my favorites that I think applies very appropriately to your channel. It’s from Albert Einstein… "Imagination is more important than knowledge".

  36. Greg Rodney on July 6, 2023 at 2:39 pm

Matthew, if the so called mistake can be sold…it becomes "artistic license" !!!! You have to look them in the eye and tell them you planned it that way!

  37. KEN BOREN on July 6, 2023 at 2:41 pm

good evening Matthew, just wondering what to build for all the moms in my family. have you got any new ideas, for small projects?

  38. B. L. Wilson on July 6, 2023 at 2:42 pm

As I’m pricing things to go in my booth I’m viewing your video. I would love to stop going to Goodwill upcycling things and start making my own things to sell.
You are motivating SIR! I get excited about woodwork after watching your videos. Maybe this is my passion, my thing that will bring me joy 🤩 😊

  39. Melissa Silver on July 6, 2023 at 2:43 pm

8:15 – The rustic ladder. Sorry if I wasn’t paying attention properly, but I remembered a tip I learned from Shawn Graham @Wortheffort which is to lay the legs down, and holding a pencil flat (probably on some sort of block), you can draw a nice straight line

  40. Ken Horn on July 6, 2023 at 2:43 pm

I like the idea of that wall art. It’s something that you can ship easily giving you an unlimited range to market them
